A British doctor has admitted to plotting to murder his mother’s partner by administering a fake Covid-19 vaccine laced with poison. Thomas Kwan, 53, carried out the attempt in Newcastle, northern England, though his victim, Patrick O’Hara, survived, according to CNN.
Kwan, a family doctor from Sunderland, disguised himself as a nurse and even measured his mother’s blood pressure before injecting O’Hara with a toxic substance. Prosecutors revealed that following the injection, O’Hara developed necrotising fasciitis, a life-threatening bacterial infection that destroys flesh.
On Monday, at Newcastle Crown Court, Kwan pleaded guilty to attempted murder shortly after the trial began. He had earlier admitted to administering a harmful substance. Prosecutor Peter Makepeace remarked during the trial, “Sometimes, the truth can indeed be stranger than fiction.”
Makepeace explained that Kwan’s actions were driven by concerns over his mother’s will, which stated that her house would go to O’Hara if he outlived her. “Mr. Kwan used his extensive knowledge and research on poisons to implement his plan,” Makepeace said.
To carry out the plot, Kwan booked a hotel room under a false name, used fake license plates on his car, and donned a wig to disguise himself as a community nurse when visiting O’Hara’s home.
